Safety and Crisis Support

Chaegim uses a four-level crisis detection system on every message.

Level 0 — General distress

Chaegim acknowledges the distress and continues the conversation with heightened care.

Level 1 — Self-harm ideation

Chaegim responds with empathy and gently surfaces support options without pausing the conversation.

Level 2 — Active self-harm

Conversation pauses. Full-screen crisis resources shown. Cannot dismiss for 5 seconds.

Level 3 — Immediate risk

Same as Level 2 plus anonymised event logged for annual reporting. Emergency services are prominently listed first.

Chaegim is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services.

Accountability Buddy — what buddies see

If you have been invited as an accountability buddy, you will receive weekly summary emails containing only goal-progress information. You will never see the content of private conversations, crisis events, or any sensitive session data.

Buddy summaries are generated automatically and reviewed by AI to ensure no sensitive information is included before sending.

If you do not wish to receive these emails, you can unsubscribe, end the relationship, or request deletion of your data at any time via the link in any email you have received. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Regulatory compliance

Chaegim is designed to comply with California SB 243 (Intimate Partner Violence AI Safety Act) and equivalent obligations in other jurisdictions. This includes mandatory crisis detection on every message, immediate surfacing of crisis resources, and annual anonymised reporting of crisis events.

Chaegim is also compliant with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Age policy

Chaegim is strictly an 18+ service. Age is verified at onboarding using Didit facial age estimation and, where required, a government ID document check. We do not ask users to enter their date of birth. Users under 18 are blocked immediately and no account is created. This restriction is enforced on every platform: iOS, Android, and web.

Facial age check: During onboarding, your front camera takes a single photo which is sent securely to our age verification partner solely to estimate whether you are 18 or over. The photo is deleted immediately after processing. We receive only a pass or fail result. No photo is stored. No biometric data is retained.

Consent: You must explicitly tick a checkbox confirming you are 18 or older before your camera opens. This consent is timestamped and stored.

Inconclusive results: If the facial check cannot confirm your age after two attempts, you may contact [email protected] with proof of age for manual review within 24 hours.

Service unavailability: If the age verification service is temporarily unavailable, access is blocked until the service is restored. We do not accept date-of-birth entry as a fallback.

iOS (Australia): On iOS devices in Australia, Chaegim also checks Apple's Declared Age Range API where available. A declared age under 18 blocks access immediately regardless of the facial check result.

Annual reporting

Chaegim maintains anonymised crisis event logs for annual safety reporting.
